Joe needs surgery :(

What a treat! Two posts in a day. But I have some really blogworthy news that I just couldn't hold back.

My poor little doggy, Joe. He's been limping for over a week and we just now took him to the vet (I know...bad dog mom). I thought for sure it was just going to be some soft tissue ailment and they'd give us some Rimadyl and send us on our way. NOPE. Ligament tear requiring surgical repair. The good news is, he doesn't seem to be in any pain and he's as upbeat as ever. It'll just be a minor financial burden, but we all run into those from time to time, so I guess we'll live.

My second news of the day: I just got home from happy hour with Sarah Torrance, Ashley Naven, and her almost-3-year-old son, Cash, at Humble Pie. What an awesome HH! I had a $2 Bud Lite on draft, and they had other beers, wine, and drinks on special as well as $5 8-inch pizzas (cheese, pepperoni, and margherita). A two-thumbs-up on the Lu Meter for sure! It was great to catch up with those girls. Next time I see Sarah, it will be in Norwich, VT in September for her wedding day. Woohoo!

And lastly, Dylan has decided to return from his leave from American Eagle and fly the Embraer out of Dallas once again. He'll be in training for five weeks starting May 17th and then will hopefully hold a line with four day trips and weekends off. Hopefully. The business of corporate flying is not exactly booming right now, and he's been in limbo for so long that he decided to take the plunge and be an airline pilot again. I know I'll miss him for those three nights every week, but we'll both be a lot happier with him back at work, and its definitely the best option right now. The people I work with ask me every single day what Dylan is up to, and then we all moan in jealousy of his lifestyle, so if nothing else, at least that daily ritual will be a thing of the past!

Time to pack for Sedona and get the dogs ready for their stay at The Happy Dog Inn. I hope nobody bullies poor gimpy Joe while he's there. I hope you have a fantastic weekend!

Busy...

I am already running late to work, but decided it was a great time for a new post. What a great and busy week! Dylan took off to Seattle for a couple of days for a LN Tyee Board Meeting, and I had my first book club meeting on Wednesday. It went really great! I've discovered that I am quite the avid reader, as I spent half my morning on goodreads.com already. Next month's book is the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society, and the meeting will be a Sunday brunch at Anne's.

Yesterday, Amy and I dusted off our rollerblades for the first time in a few weeks. The temperature cooled down quickly for us to enjoy one last ride before the relentless heat. We made it all the way from her house (Sweetwater and 94th St.) to Via De Ventura and Pima. Whoa! I also went to the gym again for the first time in two weeks the other day. I gave up my class, like we all knew I would, because it pains me so much to kill two hours after work. I opted for the stair stepper instead, which was equally as good at kicking my ass. And the jewel of the week for sure was my in-home massage on Monday night. I had to miss family dinner, but it was worth it for this amazing, peaceful hour. The massage was part of my Valentine's Day gift from Dylan.

Well, today is Nora's birthday, and three days ago she had her tiny baby, Elizabeth Claire. All is well, and I can't wait to meet the little one. Congratulations to the Westphals! In other exciting news, Sunday is Dylan and my first anniversary! We are headed to Sedona for one quick night on Saturday to do some hiking and eating. Any suggestions for things we should do? I am so excited to get outta town for a night and spend some QT with my main man. Now I am REALLY late. Happy Friday!

Sunday night blues...

I just said good-bye to some of my closest friends who just paid a visit to our house out in the boonies, and now I have the Sunday night blues. Monday is coming so soon, and that bums me out. It was such a fun weekend! Last night, Jess, Steph, and I went to Oregano's in Gilbert and then to Zipp's. I didn't even know Gilbert had a downtown area. It was so cute! Shows how little I know about the East Valley. I guess I need to get out more often. Then, we had a girls slumber party at Jess's, and when Nick got home we got to see all of his weapons and devices that he has to wear around all night at work. Cool!

Today Nick brought his Rhino out to our house, and Max let us borrow his as well, so we had a 3-Rhino adventure down to the river. Kendall even joined us! I think everyone had a lot of fun. Then, I played the part of Susie Homemaker, and I am very proud of myself I must say. (I am really just trying to beef up my resume for a position as housewife. Maybe in my next life.) I planned out an entire meal for all six of us (Nick, Jess, Kris, Steph, Dylan, and me), and it actually went over well! I realized in the last few months that I really love to entertain...now if I can just convince people to drive all the way out to my house more often so I can entertain them. Steph is driving back to San Diego tomorrow, but it was so nice to have her out here. At least we know she'll be back in October for the Nick & Jess wedding.

I will sign off now with a picture of the girls from 2302. Nighty night!

Love Spell

Are you familiar with that lotion from Victoria's Secret that comes in the purple bottle called Love Spell? Max and Kristin gave it to me as one of my Christmas gifts, and when I wear it people always comment on it. Starting with my husband...but I won't tell you what he said it smells like. It's so weird. Everyone knows the smell, and everyone says something about it. What do you have to say?

Good morning!

It's 7:22 on a Saturday, and here I am! So, Salty's, though wonderful in its own little way, was a let-down once again. NO MORE HAPPY HOUR MENU. The servers have to tell you the drink specials, which are pretty good, and then its just half off the regular appetizers. No more chicken tacos for $5. I know that comes as a disappointment to many. But, we still had a great time. Some girl was there promoting Dos Equis, and we got about 5 free beers at our table.

Last night, we all learned a very important lesson. Do not place asparagus directly on the grill. You end up with crispy asparagus, which is sorta tasty, but not what you really want to end up with. Kris had us over to her house and made pork tenderloin and potatoes on the grill, and those were delicious! I recommend buying some strawberries from Costco right now. They're about the size of apples.

Tonight we are having a slumber party at la casa de Nick and Jess. Woo hoo! And tomorrow we'll hang out at the Miller house. So, Steph gets to visit every house at least once. The weekend is so wonderful.

Friends!

I realize I have been slacking on my normal happy hour updates, but unfortunately I do not have a lot of new info to share. I did, however, meet up with Jess and Nora at Grand Lux Cafe on Monday, and they have a plethora of $5 appetizers to choose from. It was delicious! Our service was good, too (possibly because we were the only people in there). I forgot to check out their drink specials...we had diet cokes! Afterward, I went over to Max and Kristin's for one last get-together before Andrew left after being here for the wedding. American chop suey was the meal at this party, but I was too full to put anything else in my mouth. It looked good though! I felt very lucky to have two social gatherings to attend on a Monday night. Here's to friends!

Also, a week or two ago, Dylan and I met up with a bunch of our friends at a Thai restaurant on FLW and 101, right by 4 Peaks Brewery (sorry, don't recall the name). They had appetizers on happy hour special, but none of them were too terrific. The best part was the $2 Kirins.

Tomorrow I have Salty Senorita in Old Town on the plate with the girls. Steph will be in town for the weekend. Yay! This will be our first meeting point to kick off the weekend. I always get so excited for Salty's, though their happy hour has gone steeply downhill in the last year or two, and I am so disappointed in them. First, you have to PAY for chips and salsa. LAME. And their $2 appetizers became $5 appetizers. Their drink specials are only average. Still, you can't beat the atmosphere, and the food is pretty good, so I am a repeat customer.

Speaking of Salty's, I am in charge of planning our 10-year class reunion, though this responsibility certainly has me a little scared. We're definitely just doing something casual, so I am thinking of mimicking our rehearsal dinner and throwing it at Salty's. Does anybody else have any other ideas of places in Old Town that could accommodate a (hopefully) large group? Any advice or ideas would be welcome!

Happy Wednesday...we've reached the hump!

Adventures in Tubac

We just spent a great night in Tubac, AZ, which is about 45 minutes south of Tucson for the Frosh and Hope (Frope) wedding. Actually, the gentlemen ventured down on Thursday to participate in the Frope Golf Tournament. Dylan's team won, and my dad's team came in second! Way to represent! Kristin, Kate, Kenna, and I drove down on Friday morning and got there in plenty of time to visit with everybody and then be at the wedding at 4:30. The resort was beautiful, and Hope did such a wonderful job with all the fun little touches she added to the ceremony and reception. My favorite part was Hope's brother and Geoff's sisters singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" together during the ceremony. Max was the best man and performed a terrific rap/toast at the reception, which I am sure will appear on YouTube this week for your viewing pleasure.

On Saturday, the Palmer clan went to down to the Tumacacori Spanish Mission. Because Max came along, we had luck fall from the sky and admission was free because it was National Park Week. Kristin, who found the Mission so fascinating, exclaimed halfway through our visit "thank goodness this was free." I felt the same way, but it was nice to get out of the resort for an hour or so and see some Arizona history. I know this is off topic, but I think Arizona is SO cool. There is so much stuff to see on a weekend or day trip. I get Arizona Highways every month, and I find it so fascinating. Dylan and I (and possibly the Palmer parents) want to take a couple of Arizona Highways weekend trips this summer...let me know if you're interested in joining us!

Here are some shots from the weekend, but when I gather more pictures from my mom and other people, I will make a slideshow. These are just from my camera, and I took advantage of the open bar very early in the night, which didn't make for great picture taking during the reception!

Everything is good in life when you can enjoy a Greyhound on a sunny afternoon!

Plenty of pool time at the Tubac Resort

Celebrating the Frosh nuptials, just two weeks shy of our first anniversary!

Fast forward through the ceremony and into the reception, when things got a little crazy.

Here is the little chapel at the resort where the ceremony took place

There were flowers all over the hotel grounds. So beautiful!

We didn't eat at this restaurant, but we did have breakfast across the street at the Cow Palace.

Some shots from Tumacacori. You can see that Dylan enjoyed a few too many Bloody Marys that morning.

The reason it's so hard to leave for work in the morning...

Rat Bath Time!

Joe and Ramona got an A+ report card after staying at Petsmart for the weekend, so we rewarded them with a bath in the laundry room sink. I don't know if they really felt rewarded, but they sure smelt cleaner afterward. They look like such little rats when they're wet!

Yeeeehawww!

Dylan, Shawn, Elaine and I spent our Saturday night at the Cave Creek Fiesta Days Rodeo, and it was SO fun! The only downer was that it was on 28th St. and the Carefree Hwy, not actually in Cave Creek, like we thought. It ended up being well worth the drive. First of all, I got to wear my cowgirl boots. Secondly, admission was $10/person, and we all agreed it was definitely $10 worth of entertainment. Lastly, the beers were only $3 (Coors, Coors Lite, and Blue Moon) and the food was cheap, too! We stayed for all the events...I didn't even get bored one time, and that says a lot! The best part was the motocross demonstration during intermission. This rodeo kicked the Prescott Rodeo's butt. A definite Lu Two Thumbs Up!

Thank goodness for online shopping!

Does anyone else feel like going out to run errands or shopping is a total freakin' fiasco these days? I usually avoid retail places when I can because basically I can't stand the general public. They're usually too slow-moving for me. But, I think I just had extra bad luck today. First, I had to pick up just a couple things from Kierland, and the parking was horrendous...you have to search everywhere for a spot and then walk a mile to get to where you want to go (unless you valet it, which I don't). Then, I went to Old Navy and stood in line at check-out for what seemed like 14 hours because people have all kinds of weird coupons and returns/exchanges, and the place is totally understaffed. That ALWAYS happens there. Then I stopped at Fry's, and I didn't know that Velveeta was so preserved that it didn't require refrigeration before its opened, so I spent the last 20 minutes of my shopping trip on a wild goose chase looking for the preserved cheese aisle. I think I am better off leaving the errands to my very patient husband. He does a great job of grocery shopping, Costco runs, etc. Thanks Dylan!

That's enough of my ranting. I am actually wrapping up a pretty fine, low-key weekend. As usual, I was able to enjoy the weather before it turns oven-like. Dinner is cooking, laundry is in the dryer, and the ironing is done. I feel so domestic, and that doesn't happen a lot! Have a great week! Mine is already great since I have a four-day work week, thanks to the upcoming Frope nuptials. Yay!

April flowers

The desert is in bloom! Just on our property I have found wildflowers in four different colors, and all around us the desert is GREEN. Not something you see a whole lot. I am trying to enjoy it now before it all dries up and becomes fire fuel this summer (yikes). I took a bunch of pictures around our house, and yesterday Dylan took me out in the rhino to shoot some more in the national forest. On our ride we encountered both a Gila monster and a rattlesnake (no pictures...too scared). From what I can remember, Gila monsters are both very rare and very poisonous (and I think their saliva is used to make a diabetes drug too), so that was a thrill. I drove the rhino all the way home and did pretty good, except when I ran it into a cactus on Dylan's side. Also, I ran over a snake's tail without even seeing it, and Dylan saw the snake try to strike at us! I think I might stop going for jogs in the desert by myself...

Here are some of the pictures to remember this time of year by once it becomes hot and miserable.

Not your typical Saturday

First off, it's well into the 7 o'clock hour. A rather late Saturday morning post, if you ask me. Secondly, I have the day off to do whatever I like. Though that's not so unusual for a Saturday, what is strange is that EVERYBODY ELSE IS WORKING! Though I would very much prefer to spend my Saturday morning with my lovely husband and possibly take a walk with M, K, and H, a part of my feels slightly (okay very) liberated that for once I am home and Dylan has to get up to work. That has never happened before!

And this all started because I was supposed to work today...it would have been the first Saturday in over 15 months that I would have worked. I am a very spoiled pharmacist to be able to say that. So Dylan, being a very-high-in-demand driver's ed instructor, booked two drives for this morning. Then, it turned out a different pharmacist was able to cover the Saturday with the help of an intern we're planning to hire, and I felt nothing but relief. Not even the overtime pay was enough to tempt me into giving up my Saturday (and it would have only been till 2pm)!

Anyhow, Dylan will be done by 1pm, and so will Max, so I think this Saturday will probably end up being pretty typical. When I found out I had to work, we had to pass on going up to my parents' cabin to celebrate my mom's birthday (Happy Birthday Mom!), and even though my work plans changed, Dylan, Max, and Kristin had all signed up to work, so it looks like we're homebound with nothing too exciting going on. That is fine with me...I have big plans to dive into my book for Book Club on my anti-gravity lounger in the backyard. Maybe I'll fit in a jog or walk the dogs before it gets too hot. We'll see...the day is mine!

But quickly, before I tie this up, I would like to share a story from last weekend. On Easter Sunday, my allergies were killing me so I stopped at the pharmacy counter at Safeway to pick up some Sudafed. In a friendly tone I asked the old, tall, thin, glasses-wearing male pharmacist (he looked just like what I think people assume all pharmacists look like), "They're making your work on Easter?" He replied, "Yes, that's life in the pharmacy world." I thought to myself, haha chump, my pharmacy's not even open on ANY Sunday, let alone Easter, and smiled to myself. It was then that I silently resolved to myself, I will never work in a job that makes me miserable, and the typical pharmacist's hours DO make me miserable (I've tried it). Late nights, every other weekend, on your feet for 12 hours. I won't ever do it again. I am lucky to have the job I do now, but if something happens and I can't find another cake pharmacy job, I'll just do a different job. Your job is not worth wasting the better hours of the week on, and that's that. I just wanted you to know...so if something ever happens, do not let me take a job that will make me miserable! Have a great weekend (unless you're a retail or hospital pharmacist and you're working...that's a bummer)!

Easter 2010

Easter Weekend

We spent lots of time outdoors this weekend, as promised! The big event of Saturday was a long Rhino ride all through the National Forest with Nick on Max's quad and our neighbor, Lyn, on his quad. It was so cool to see the desert in bloom like that. I don't think I've ever seen it look so pretty in my whole life. Little wildflowers and ocotillos in bloom were everywhere. I wish I had had my big camera, but the dust might have ruined it anyways. And there was a LOT of dust, which was the only downside of the trip since I could barely breathe as it was with these allergies. I posted some pictures from my phone camera on Facebook, but they don't really do much justice to the view.

This morning, Dylan and I met Elaine at Pinnacle Peak for a hike. It was crowded, but the weather was perfect. We all jogged the last part of the hike, and Elaine and I improved on our time from last week by 4.5 minutes! We plan to keep this up until it gets too hot :) Then we showered and headed out to Horizon Park for the family Easter get-together. It was a perfect day to be outside, and its always nice to catch up with the extended family. The best part of the day was that not only were there burgers and chicken on the grill, but Aunt Lucy also made lasagna and eggplant parmesan. Of course she did, she never forgets that..it's the best part of being Italian.

Then, Dylan and I headed over to Gainey Ranch to pick some grapefruit, the juice of which I am enjoying right now. That man is one grapefruit-picking fiend. We also heard about the Arizona (or actually Baja California) earthquake on our way home, but we didn't feel it at all. It seems like a bunch of crazy natural phenomena have been occurring all over the world in the last decade...I think Planet Earth is getting very fed up with mankind, and I don't blame her at all.

As evening approaches, I am starting to come down with the Sunday Night Blues. Once I get Monday under my belt, I start to feel a lot better. Hope everyone had a great Easter and a wonderful weekend.

House Paint!

The original paint job on our house was real shotty and looked awful by the time we moved in, which was only two years after the house was built. The paint must have been watered-down because it was really faded and blotchy, especially on the sides of the house with the most sun exposure. We finally broke down and got a new paint job, and I am so happy with the way it looks. It's so refreshing to drive up to my house and think how nice it looks. For a few days, our neighbors must have thought we were crazy because there were big white streaks everywhere from where the painters had patched the stucco before they painted.

But now, no more blotches, just one even coat of paint. Whew! Hopefully we don't have to do that again for a very long time...

The area around the garage was one of the worst areas for blotchiness, but look how great it looks now!

And now that that's done, we just have to landscape both the front and back yards, put up a fence, and build a pool. Maybe I'll win the lottery this year so we can actually do that some time soon :) I suppose we should start with removing the weeds from all around our house that are so thick and tall you would think our house was in the middle of a meadow rather than a desert. Ahhhhh, the house, our never-ending project. Good thing I love it so much.
